Igorot people are from the highlands of Northern Luzon in the Philippines. The quality of the carving makes this probably from the 1930s to the 1950s when these half busts were made for the first groups of tourists and then post war. There are great detail in their hair, hair basket and head dresses. The traditional pipe, hair band and wooden and bone necklace are featured well. Each bust has 1 earing (probably they both miss the earing on the left ears.)
The Igorot were the last of the headhunters in the Philippines and were once a warlike people. Pacified by the Spanish and Americans, they remain peaceful but still retain many cultural elements, such as their belief is ancestral spirits and the ritualistic use of animal sacrifice and song and dance to propitiate them.
Made from a hardwood, nicely polished, these busts are real work of craftsmanship. Some wears exist as pictured. Please inspect pictures for details.
Heights are 8" and 8.5". Weights: 2 Lb 1 Oz and 2 Lb 4 Oz.
